- Abstract:
The relationship between architectural representation and its intended product-a building, has undergone a profound transformation over the centuries. Before the age of modern technology, the systematically predictive role of architectural drawing so taken for granted today was less dominant in the evolution from architectural idea to built work. The age of computer-aided design has brought another dimension to architectural representation. With the rapid recent development of computer hardware and software, we became capable of producing images with various kinds of presentation techniques.From studying the history of the development of visual devices, it is apparent that with each new visual device, there was an effect on changing human consciousness. The digital image regardless to the various techniques used to represent it, has a physical quality and what is significant here is the mental interpretation of the digital image.Although there are many parties involved in the design process, it is primarily the architect’s role to covey the appropriate message to the client. Thus, the main objective of this research is to study the graphic presentation of architecture and its use in communicating design ideas and information. This was achieved by investigating the effect of this visual image on perceiving architecture when it is represented by a variety of techniques. The overall aim is to offer an approach that is useful for all parties involved in the design process and the architect in particular.The nature of this research means that it takes in three separate, but related disciplines; Computer Aided Architectural Design (CAAD), architecture and psychology. An extensive study took place to study the nature of psychological tests and to consider their implications in analysing architectural representation. This was followed by a pilot study to refine the final test and finally the experimental study was designed and a survey was undertaken to collect the necessary data.The research confirmed that people differ in their perception of the same image (as found from other studies) and found that presentation technique and media play a significant role on the way people perceive architectural images. Moreover, other differences were found from the experimental test that might influence peoples’ perception. Likewise, the research investigates the effect of architectural education on students’ perception. Results from experimental study were drawn together with series of suggestions on how best to represent architectural design with different groups.
